Newsom Moves Forward With Gun Control Bill Modeled After Texas Abortion Ban

California Gov. Gavin Newsom recently expressed support for a series of gun control bills to allow private citizens to sue the gun industry in an effort to stop them from selling certain weapons, mimicking the structure of Texas' Heartbeat Act that bans most abortions.

The bill would allow people to sue individuals who violate California’s ban of certain weapons by engaging in "unfair business practices" or knowingly selling firearms to people who can’t legally own them. Newsom first proposed the legislation back in December in response to the Supreme Court's decision to allow the Texas abortion law to remain in effect. "We can be on the defense complaining about it or we can play by those rules," Newsom said during a press conference in San Diego, while also expressing confidence that the Supreme Court could not overturn the law if passed.

Some left-and center-rated outlets such as The Associated Press (Center bias) noted how Newsom’s proposed legislation is "exactly what gun rights groups feared would happen" if the Supreme Court allowed the Texas law to stay in effect, which is "why the Firearms Policy Coalition opposed that law at the high court." Some right-rated outlets such as Fox News (Right bias) linked the increased homicide rates in Los Angeles and other areas to certain events such as when progressives took over in criminal justice leadership positions and when "the 'defund police' movement picked up steam."
