Venezuelan Opposition Leader Wins Nobel Prize, Trump and Allies Criticize Choice

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has won this year's Nobel Peace Prize. The recognition comes despite calls from some quarters for US President Trump to receive the award.

The Details: Machado, who has been lauded as a "brave and committed champion of peace" by members of the committee, was awarded the prize for her "tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela" and her struggle to transition the country from dictatorship to democracy. Machado’s recognition comes amid a turbulent political climate in Venezuela, and has remained in the country despite threats to her life, inspiring millions through her efforts. Machado dedicated her award to “the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support for our cause!” According to BBC (Center bias), Trump called Machado to congratulate her.

Trump and the Nobel Prize: Trump has long expressed a desire to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. During his address to the UN General Assembly in September, Trump said he has “ended seven ‘un-endable’ wars,” in the last seven months, citing his administration's involvement in mediating various international peace efforts, including the India-Pakistan dispute, fighting between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, and the Israel-Iran tensions. He has often compared his achievements to those of previous laureates like former President Barack Obama, whom Trump criticized for receiving the award "for doing nothing.” In response to Machado’s win, Trump and his allies, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, have criticized the decision, suggesting that political bias influenced the award. The deadline for nominations was Jan. 31, days into Trump’s second term in office, therefore this year’s recognitions would apply to 2026.

How the Media Covered It: Outlets on the left and in the center highlighted Trump and other Republicans’ response to the decision. Politico (Lean Left) ran the headline, “MAGA steams at Trump’s Nobel snub,” and said Republicans feel Trump was “robbed” of the award. Bloomberg (Lean Left) wrote, the “World Awaits Blowback as the Nobel Slips From Trump’s Hands.” Time Magazine (Lean Left) said most of the peace efforts Trump celebrates were from “world leaders who were widely seen as doing it to curry favor with him.” Outlets including Reuters (Center), Newsweek (Center), the New York Post (Lean Right), and the Daily Caller (Right) mentioned Machado dedicating her award to Trump. Newsweek highlighted Machado’s past praise of Trump. Other outlets on the right highlighted calls for Trump to have won the award, citing the most recent peace deal in Gaza.
