President Trump hyped his revamped July 4 celebration as the “show of a lifetime,” as officials sought to ready military equipment and VIP guests for the event amid mounting questions about logistics and costs.

Mr. Trump has overhauled Washington’s traditional festivities to include an event called “Salute to America,” which will feature a presidential speech from the Lincoln Memorial, a display of military equipment and flyovers by military planes. He is also creating a VIP ticketed area that will hold family, friends, government officials, campaign aides and troops.

Happy Fourth of July, everybody. I want you to have a great day. No moaning about the state of the nation.

Don’t obsess about Donald Trump! It’s true he thought watching a bunch of tanks roll through Washington, D.C., would be a great way of celebrating our national character. Fortunately, it turned out the city streets couldn’t support his vision. The military came up with a compromise, dragging in tanks and other tanklike vehicles on flatbed trucks, in a very expensive show totally unrelated to their actual function.

There’s no prescribed way to celebrate July 4th. And that’s the best part of it.
Donald Trump is recruiting some Abrams tanks and obsessing about some of the choreography for an Independence Day parade in Washington D.C. He wants it to be militaristic, bombastic, and he wants to be at the center of it. I couldn’t care less. And, I wonder why anyone else does.
