Biden, Trump React to Capitol Hill Breach

President-elect Joe Biden, President Donald Trump and other lawmakers addressed the breach of the Capitol building Wednesday. From a Delaware theater Wednesday afternoon, Biden called on the "mob to pull back and allow democracy to go forward," adding that there was "an assault on the rule of law" that “borders on sedition.” Biden also called for Trump to go on national television "to fulfill his oath and defend the Constitution and demand an end to this siege.” Shortly after, Trump released a video calling for "peace" and urging non-violence while repeating his claims that the election was stolen from him. The president told his supporters, "I know your pain. I know your hurt. But you have to go home now.” Trump's video has since been removed from social media platforms Twitter, Facebook and YouTube; Twitter and Facebook said they removed the video for its potential to contribute to ongoing violence, while YouTube cited a policy against content that make unsubstantiated claims of widespread fraud or errors. Trump's accounts have been locked for 24 hours by Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Lawmakers on both sides, including Vice President Mike Pence, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi condemned the violence as they reconvened at the secured Capitol building Wednesday night to resume the electoral vote count. Biden's call for protesters to pull back was covered across the political spectrum.
