Uvalde School District Suspends All Police Department Activities

Summary from the AllSides News Team

School district officials in Uvalde, Texas suspended their entire police department’s activities on Friday.

The decision came shortly after the district fired a recently-hired officer who was revealed by CNN (Left bias) to be one of the state troopers under investigation for their response to the deadly May shooting. Two officials, Lt. Miguel Hernandez and Ken Mueller, were placed on administrative leave without explanation; Mueller chose to retire. Protesters, led by a legal guardian of one of the children killed in the shooting, had camped out in front of the district’s administrative building for over a week to demand the police force’s suspension until investigations into the shooting were complete.

Coverage was widespread and mostly balanced across the spectrum, particularly in local Texas outlets. Coverage in left-rated outlets was more likely to focus on the protesters. Headlines often varied on whether the “entire police department” or “the police department’s activities” were suspended.

The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District announced Friday it has suspended its entire district police force, months after a shooting at Robb Elementary School left 19 students and two teachers dead, ABC News reported.

Officials around the nation have questioned why it took 77 minutes for police to breach a pair of adjoining rooms where a gunman was mercilessly slaughtering fourth-grade students and their teachers.

The Uvalde school board previously voted unanimously in August to fire district police chief Pete Arredondo over the botched police response.

On Friday, the district said it...
