Are Harris and Trump Held to Different Standards?
Summary from the AllSides News Team
Several commentators on the left have suggested Vice President Kamala Harris is held to a different standard than former President Trump. Those on the right say that voters don't know Harris, and she hasn't made it easy for them.
From the Left: Commentator Van Jones said, “Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are not taking the same exam,” adding, "He gets to be lawless. She has to be flawless. That’s what’s unfair.” Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said, "Anybody who's truly interested can go and read about [her policies]," and "It's a double standard that is partly because they are still getting to know her. But also because they're still grappling with the idea like, ‘Oh, am I really going to vote for a woman to be president and commander in chief?’" A Washington Post (Lean Left bias) writer also argued there was a double standard, saying while Harris has been criticized for not taking enough interviews, Trump has been called a fascist by former employees.
From the Right: A Washington Examiner (Lean Right) writer responded to Van Jones' criticism. "The biggest reason the 'exam' is harder for Harris is that people know Trump better than her and she has tried to keep her convictions a mystery." He argues that she has hidden her convictions by design, "She avoided a competitive process for obtaining the nomination. She then kept a light interview schedule and stuck to tightly scripted events until late in the truncated general election campaign."

Trump, by contrast, does freewheeling rallies where he veers off script with reckless abandon. Democratic attempts to call attention to his alleged gaffes often fall on deaf ears outside the progressive base.

Something is wrong with this split-screen picture. On one side, former president Donald Trump rants about mass deportations and claims to have stopped “wars with France,” after being described by his longest-serving White House chief of staff as a literal fascist. On the other side, commentators debate whether Vice President Kamala Harris performed well enough at a CNN town hall to “close the deal.”
Seriously? Much of a double standard here?
Somehow, it is apparently baked into this campaign that Trump is allowed to talk and act like a complete lunatic while Harris has...
