OpenAI founder Sam Altman was ousted from the artificial intelligence company because he was not candid with its board, the company said Friday.

OpenAI's board of directors said in a statement Friday that it underwent a "deliberative review process" and concluded that Altman was not "consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities" and had to be removed.

"We are grateful for Sam's many contributions to the founding and growth of OpenAI," the board read. "At the same time, we believe new leadership is necessary as we move forward." Altman will now be replaced by Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati as interim CEO while the company seeks an appropriate replacement.
