No major migrant influx seen in Laredo so far as Title 42 deadline nears
As Title 42 comes to an end at 11:59 p.m. Eastern on Thursday night, Laredo was prepared for a potential surge in migrants into the area. However, as some areas around the country actually were seeing influxes trying to beat Title 42's removal -- many feared the strict new policies of the Biden administration may make it harder for them to stay in the U.S. -- the Gateway City had not seen much difference from recent days.
As of Thursday afternoon, the city had not reported any significant influx of migrants, as shelters have seen steady increases in recent weeks but no recent major spikes with the Title 42 deadline coming.
However, the city continues to state that it is prepared for any major potential influx either through the port of entry or from those individuals who are redirected to Laredo shelters from other areas such as El Paso and The Valley.
“As a city, we are making all the appropriate preparations to do what we can with the resources that we have,” Laredo Mayor Victor Trevino said. “A primary focus is protecting our medical infrastructure and city resources so that Laredoans are not negatively impacted while providing humanitarian services to migrants.”
