This Abridge News topic aggregates four unique arguments on different sides of the debate. Here are the quick facts to get you started:

THE QUICK FACTS

  • Soon after the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell released a statement saying a potential Trump nominee for Ginsburg's now-vacant seat "will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate." President Donald Trump said he would announce a nominee within a week.
  • Following McConnell's statement, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said that "if Leader McConnell and Senate Republicans move forward with this, then nothing is off the table for next year. Nothing is off the table." Democrats would need at least four Republican senators to block a confirmation vote.
  • McConnell also stirred controversy in 2016 when he blocked a vote on President Barack Obama's nominee to replace Justice Antonin Scalia, who died in February of that year. A key part of McConnell's reasoning was that the Senate and the Presidency were controlled by different parties, so the vote should wait until after the presidential election.
  • Ginsburg's dying wish, as reported a longtime friend, was "that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed." (Source: NPR) President Trump has since suggested, without evidence, that the statement was "written out by Adam Schiff and Schumer and Pelosi."
