Jimmy Kimmel Moves Talarico Interview to YouTube, Citing FCC Pressure

Late-night ABC talk show host Jimmy Kimmel will broadcast an interview with Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico on YouTube instead of network television following what he called threats by President Donald Trump's Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

For Context: Kimmel said the FCC threats were "based on simple traditional editorial decisions, guest bookings it would seem they don't like." In January, the FCC released guidance stating that entertainment talk shows should abide by the same "equal time" rules as broadcast news stations, which stipulates that shows are required to offer equal airtime to all candidates running for political office. Kimmel was also suspended last September for what was called "inflammatory remarks about [Charlie] Kirk's assassination" and faced calls to be fired after saying First Lady Malania Trump looked like "an expectant widow."

"Politically Motivated": Outlets on the left like The New Republic (Left bias) and The Washington Post (Lean Left) were less likely to highlight the FCC "equal time" guidance, instead framing the story around what the New Republic called Trump's attempt "to censor late-night TV." The Washington Post article highlighted Kimmel suggesting "the pressure was politically motivated." Both articles mentioned Kimmel saying, "Thank goodness we have that [YouTube], because in the America that we live in right now, that is the best we can do."

"Did What He Does Best": Outlets on the right like The New York Post (Right) and Fox News (Right), conversely, were more likely to highlight the equal time guidance, with Fox calling Kimmel's remarks towards the FCC "defiant." The Post article mentioned that "Trump and Kimmel have repeatedly traded barbs over the past decade, with the president saying Kimmel has 'zero talent' and poor ratings and is the worst late-night host on television."

Possible Misinformation: The New York Post reported that Jimmy Kimmel Live will no longer be aired after May 2027, marking the last season after 24 years on air. However, according to USA Today (Lean Left) reporting, ABC refuted the report, saying "This information is inaccurate—any reports about the future of the show at this point are purely speculative."
