Tom Nichols is a national security expert and a professor at the U.S. Naval War College and at the Harvard Extension School. He has written on topics like Russia, nuclear weapons, and national security affairs, and is the author of the book "The Death of Expertise," which examines why people mistrust established knowledge and how it damages democratic stability. His columns have appeared in publications like The Atlantic, The Federalist, and USA Today, where he is a member on the outlet's board of contributors. Nichols is a self-professed "Never Trump" conservative, and has argued that the president is "too mentally unstable" to serve as commander-in-chief. In a USA Today column published August 2019, Nichols announced that he had become an "ex-Republican" and would vote for the Democratic nominee in the 2020 presidential election, providing the candidate was not "obviously mentally unstable" or "in any way sympathetic — or worse, potentially beholden — to a hostile foreign power."
