Charlie Kirk Assassination Suspect In Custody

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Updated 9/12/25 at 11:29am EST

President Donald Trump said Friday morning, "With a high degree of certainty, we have him in custody." Twenty-two year-old Tyler Robinson, of Utah, is the suspect.

The Details: The FBI released images of a person of interest on Thursday, and posted a $100,000 reward for information leading to the killer’s arrest. Two suspects were previously taken into custody and released after interrogation.

For Context: Federal agents said a high-powered bolt-action rifle was located near the purported escape route, and a footprint and paw print were collected for analysis. A law enforcement bulletin also reportedly said bullets engraved with “expressions of transgender and antifascist ideology” were found with the rifle believed to be utilized for the shooting, but Justice Department officials said the bulletin may not accurately reflect the messages on the ammunition, and more recent coverage appears to refute the original reports about the nature of the messages. According to Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason, the suspect “appear[ed] to be college age” and had “blended in well” on the school campus.

How the Media Covered It: CNBC (Lean Left bias) highlighted some of Trump's comments made on Fox News minutes after learning of Robinson's arrest, including that Trump "hope[s] he gets the death penalty." Newsweek (Center) noted "the shooting comes amid a broader climate of political violence across the United States," while pointing to the June shooting of Representative Melissa Hortman (D-MN) and her husband. The Daily Caller (Right) mentioned that Kirk's shooting "prompted outrage against rising political violence in America," while highlighting a comment from Trump saying, "For years, those on the American left have compared wonderful Americans like Charlie to Nazi's and the world's worst mass murderers and criminals." "This kind of rhetoric," Trump continued, "is directly responsible for the terrorism that we're seeing in our country today, and it must stop right now."
