Is There an 'Invasion' at the Southern Border?

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Fifty-four percent of Americans say there's an invasion at the southern border, according to a recent NPR/Ipsos poll.

Republicans (76%) believe this more than Democrats (40%) and independents (46%) do, and 91% of Republicans who use Fox News (Right bias) as their primary news source believe this vs. 71% of Republicans who have a different primary source, according to the poll. Ipsos said the results indicate an embrace of "misleading information or politically charged rhetoric about immigration," and that views on immigration depend heavily on party affiliation and "media consumption habits."

Approximately 5 million people from over 150 countries have entered the U.S. illegally during Joe Biden's presidency, according to Customs and Border Patrol data. The number of migrant encounters with Border Patrol has risen from around 800,000 in 2019 to over 1.6 million in 2021 and over 1.8 million in 2022. The rate of migrants coming from countries other than Mexico, such as Cuba and Venezuela, is also rising rapidly.

Some reports across the political spectrum, including from NPR and Newsmax (Right bias)framed the data as evidence that Americans are embracing "extreme immigration rhetoric." A Daily Caller report said the pollsters "blamed conservative media for these beliefs among Republicans." That report and others from the right and center, including from NewsNation and Axios (Center bias)focused more on the recent rise in illegal border crossings and migrant deaths than left-rated sources did.
