Rudy Giuliani Named as Target in Georgia 2020 Election Criminal Probe

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Rudy Giuliani has been called on to testify before a special grand jury in Georgia investigating efforts by former President Donald Trump and his supporters to overturn the 2020 election.

Giuliani’s lawyers on Monday revealed that an Atlanta prosecutor labeled him an official "target" of the criminal probe. Giuliani, who previously served as Trump's personal lawyer, is seen as a prominent leader of the pro-Trump legal team that highlighted alleged claims of voter fraud and filed numerous lawsuits to block election results from battleground states. Giuliani's attorney Robert Costello said that people are "delusional" if they believe Giuliani will reveal details of his private conversations with Trump. While Giuliani attempted to avoid travel by citing a recent heart stent procedure, he is scheduled to testify in Atlanta on Wednesday.

In response to the efforts of Giuliani and his legal team, a group of bipartisan senators introduced legislation last month that would increase the number of Congress members required to object election results. The January 6 committee investigating the Capitol riot is also attempting to uncover the "culmination of an attempted coup" to overturn the election.

Some reports suggested the probe could be connected to the investigation into the handling of classified records found at Mar-a-Lago. Other reports highlighted how Giuliani has been under investigation for three years without being indicted and that President Biden "boasted" about readying lawyers to contest voting results leading up to the 2020 election.
