Republican and Democratic Senators Exchange Endorsements Across Party Lines

Summary from the AllSides News Team

During a joint interview on CNN Sunday, Senators Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) endorsed each other for reelection.

Murkowski is facing a tough primary challenge in this year's midterm elections, and Manchin has not yet announced whether he is running in 2024.  The two moderate senators appeared on CNN to promote bipartisanship amid early talks to change the Electoral Count Act. Both have drawn criticism from members of their own caucuses on a number of legislative issues. Manchin has opposed President Biden's Build Back Better Act and Murkowski opposed an attempt by Republicans to repeal Obamacare in 2019.

Reports across the spectrum described the joint interview as an example of the two senators "crossing party lines."

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., on Sunday endorsed the re-election campaign of his Republican colleague Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, who faces a tough challenger this year supported by former President Donald Trump.

"I'm endorsing my dear friend Lisa Murkowski," Manchin said on CNN's "State of the Union." "Alaska could only be so lucky to have her continue to serve them."

Murkowski returned the favor, saying she will endorse Manchin, who is up for re-election in 2024, if he decides to run.
