Young Republicans Leaders' Group Chat Leaks, Revealing Racist, Antisemitic Remarks

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Politico (Lean Left bias) leaked messages from a group chat of leaders for the Young Republicans organization that included racial slurs, antisemitic comments, and suggestions of violence against political opponents.

The Details: The leak includes 2,900 pages of messages shared in a group of about a dozen Young Republican leaders, including the chair of the Kansas City chapter and Peter Giunta, who was chair of the New York State chapter and running to become chair of the Young Republican National Federation. When talking about the election in which he was running, Giunta said, “everyone that votes no is going to the gas chamber.” Politico counted more than a dozen uses of variations on “ni***” and other racially charged comments. There were also uses of “fa****” and jokes about sexually assaulting political opponents.

Response from Republicans: At least one member of the group chat lost their job, and another had a job offer rescinded, according to Politico. The Young Republican National Federation’s board of directors said, “We are appalled by the vile and inexcusable language revealed in the Politico article published today. Such behavior is disgraceful, unbecoming of any Republican, and stands in direct opposition to the values our movement represents.” JD Vance said, “I refuse to join the pearl clutching when powerful people call for political violence,” in reference to recently publicized messages from Democratic Virginia attorney general candidate Jay Jones in which he fantasized about violence. “This is far worse than anything said in a college group chat, and the guy who said it could become the AG of Virginia,” Vance said.

Statements From Group Members: Bobby Walker, vice chair of the New York State Young Republicans and member of the group chat, said the messages “may have been altered, taken out of context, or otherwise manipulated” and that the “private exchanges were obtained and released in a way clearly intended to inflict harm.” Giunta apologized for the harm and said, “I have had no way of verifying their accuracy and am deeply concerned that the message logs in question may have been deceptively doctored.”

How the Media Covered It: Politico, the first outlet to publish this story, wrote that this rhetoric “comes amid a widespread coarsening of the broader political discourse and as incendiary and racially offensive tropes from the right become increasingly common in public debate.” The Hill (Center) wrote that Politico’s report “comes at a time of intense discussion about political violence in the wake of the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.” It also noted the controversy around Jones’ messages. Fox News (Right) covered this story in the context of Vance’s remarks condemning Democrats for not denouncing Jones.

Vice President JD Vance and President Donald Trump separately slammed Democrats who continue to back Virginia attorney general candidate Jay Jones as his campaign unravels over texts envisioning the murder of a former top Republican lawmaker and his young children.

Jones – who sent messages claiming he would shoot former Virginia House Speaker Todd Gilbert, R-Shenandoah, over Cambodian dictator Pol Pot and former German Chancellor Adolf Hitler – will also face off with incumbent Attorney General Jason Miyares at the University of Richmond on Thursday in their sole debate.
