Summary from the AllSides News Team
Bipartisan leaders in the House of Representatives struck a deal on Thursday to avert a government shutdown.
The stopgap spending bill would fund the government until Feb. 18 and provide $7 billion for resettling Afghan refugees. The deal comes ahead of a Dec. 4 deadline and faces a threat from 15 Senate Republicans, who plan to filibuster the bill unless Congress blocks funding for the Biden administration’s vaccine mandate policies. Led by Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall and Utah Sen. Mike Lee, the Republicans announced their plans in a Wednesday letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Coverage was widespread on Thursday, focusing on either the House bill or Senate Republicans’ demands to block vaccine mandate funding. Some coverage in left-rated outlets framed the House bill as House Democrats’ plan. Some outlets on both sides also published explainers on the consequences of a government shutdown.
