How Expensive is Thanksgiving Compared to Past Years?

Summary from the AllSides News Team

A nationwide grocery survey by the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) found that a 10-person Thanksgiving feast will cost an estimated $58.08 this year, down 5% since last year and the lowest cost since 2021. However, a LendingTree survey found that hosts plan to spend $431 on food, drinks, and decor, a 19% increase compared to last year in overall hosting costs.

How the Left Covered It: NBC News (Lean Left bias) ran the headline "Thanksgiving dinner is historically affordable this year," saying holiday staples are nearly at their cheapest in 40 years, excluding 2020, and that although prices are up 19% from 2019, wages have risen 25%. The price of turkey also fell 6%. Business Insider (Lean Left) and NBC News both covered the AFBF study exclusively.

How the Right Covered It: While Daily Mail's (Right) story was in line with NBC and Business Insider's, Fox Business (Lean Right) and National Review (Lean Right) painted a different picture. Fox Business led with the LendingTree survey showing costs were up, and emphasized that "Inflation was on the minds of 60% of respondents." Fox Business did not cover the AFBF survey. National Review focused on the AFBF survey but pulled quotes from it that provided a different perspective than NBC or Business Insider. “Consumers are exhausted from years of inflation, and it will take more than the past two years’ improvements to ease the pain,” National Review quoted from the report, emphasizing costs were still far higher than in 2019.

LendingTree's survey found that on average, Thanksgiving dinner hosts plan to spend $431 on food, drinks and decor for the celebration. That includes an average of $265 for food and drinks, plus an additional $166 on Thanksgiving decor for the festivities. Those Thanksgiving hosts expect an average of 11 guests to attend the holiday party, the same number as last year.

Inflation-weary consumers should see the cost of their classic Thanksgiving dinner gobble less of their paychecks this year, largely because Americans are buying less of the meal's centerpiece dish, turkey.

The price tag of the traditional holiday meal, which also includes cranberries, sweet potatoes and stuffing, has dropped for a second consecutive year, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation's annual survey released on Wednesday.

You may not know it by looking at sticker prices in grocery aisles, but Thanksgiving dinner is more affordable than it has been in years.

The costs of this year’s holiday feast — estimated at $58.08 for a 10-person gathering, or $5.81 a head — dropped 5% since last year, the lowest level since 2021, according to a nationwide survey of grocery prices by the American Farm Bureau Federation, which represents millions of U.S. farmers. But the picture improves further when adjusted for inflation.
