Trump’s RNC Speech Was Expected to Show a Changed Man. Did It?

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Media across the spectrum, from Politico (Lean Left bias) to The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board (Lean Right bias) were critical of former President Trump's RNC speech, though some like The Daily Wire (Right bias) expressed positive sentiments toward it.

Unchanged Man: Jeff Greenfield of Politico wrote that despite claims from “some Republican allies” that Trump was a “changed man” since the assassination attempt, “Trump remains Trump.” Greenfield described Trump’s speech as “meandering and occasionally bizarre,” which he says is not out of line with classic Trump speeches, and called it “the one piece of good news this week” for “a battered, demoralized Democratic Party.”

Foul Ball: Keith Naughton writing for The Hill (Center bias) said Trump’s speech began strong, as he showed humility and vulnerability during the retelling of his almost-assassination, but equated the speech to “watching a towering home run ball hook foul.” Naughton said Trump had a few “good attack points” deeper in the speech but that his “strong points were stranded in a morass of repeated catchphrases and riffing” which will not aid the former president in winning over undecided voters.

Still Trump: WSJ described this week’s RNC as “a first-rate and unified show” but said Trump failed to meet the moment and cap it off with an exclamation. The Journal said Trump started out strong for about 30 minutes before “devolving into a rambling stump speech” that reminded Americans, “He is still Donald Trump.”

It began with as intensely personal an account as any presidential nominee has ever delivered — a step-by-step retelling of his near-death experience. And as soon as that narrative ended, it became… a Trump rally speech, with the prepared text delivered in a monotone worthy of a bus driver’s announcement, interrupted by lengthy ad lib riffs, jokes, shout-outs and a litany of “never seen anything like it” and “like never before.”

Even after what for anyone would be a life-changing experience, Trump remained Trump.

Some Republican allies had claimed he...

Trump’s acceptance speech should have been a home run. It wasn’t.
Opinion

There’s nothing worse in baseball than watching a towering home run ball hook foul. And that sums up Donald Trump’s biggest speech of his life. It was the former president’s chance to crush the Democrats’ chances. Instead, he has given them hope.

Trump’s acceptance started out very strong. He was doing exactly what he needed to do: show he is not the big, bad wolf the Democrats make him out to be. The retelling of his near-death experience was powerful and lent him some vulnerability and humility. The message of unity is exactly what voters...

Opinion

Republicans in Milwaukee put on a first-rate and unified show this week, and the question for Donald Trump was whether he could cap it off with a speech that would broaden his political appeal. He met the moment for about 30 minutes before devolving into a rambling stump speech that probably had many Americans heading for bed.

The former President had the audience rapt as he recounted his near-assassination on Saturday in Butler, Pa. This was a subdued, even somber Donald Trump that Americans rarely see. He struck notes of national unity...
