Summary from the AllSides News Team
President Donald Trump addressed the nation on Wednesday, citing accomplishments of his first year after returning to the White House and giving his forecast for 2026.
Gangbuster Economy in 2026: Coverage of Trump's speech from outlets on the right focused heavily on the President's forecast for the economy in 2026. Fox News (Right bias), saying the speech "sparks optimism" over the state of the economy in 2026, provided several commentators who backed the sentiment of "renewed optimism," offering praise for the President's forecast. Host of Making Money Charles Payne said "We are expecting a gangbuster year in 2026 — a noticeable year where almost every American will feel it, and it will really feel good. And those who are naysayers, who are doubting this, whether it's political or you just don't believe America can do it anymore, you're going to see it." The Washington Times (Lean Right) highlighted many of the things Trump said during the speech, saying "he tackled head-on the biggest issue of the burgeoning 2026 midterm races: Affordability." The article highlighted the list of complaints Trump mentioned about former President Joe Biden, such as "his handling of the economy, open borders, biological males playing in women's sports, bad trade deals, and a 'sick and corrupt' federal government," while also mentioning closing the border wasn't a problem with legislation, citing Trump's remark that "we just needed a new president."
Susie Wiles Made Me Do It: Outlets on the left like CNN (Lean Left) were more likely to highlight polls showing Trump is unpopular while saying "he [Trump] sounded genuinely angry that people aren't more appreciative of his attempts to lower drug prices, his executive order seeking to making housing more affordable and his bid to make Americans safer with his controversial strategy of sending National Guard troops into cities." Other outlets, like the Daily Beast (Left) called Trump's speech a "manic address," saying the real reason for the "disastrous televised address" was to appease Chief of Staff Susie Wiles "as she plays cleanup amid the fallout from her embarrassingly candid Vanity Fair article." The article also highlighted Trump's age, saying "the 79-year-old president fired off mistruth after mistruth about how well his administration is doing and attacked his predecessor, Joe Biden, without having anything new to say." After the mention of Trump's age, the article included commentary from CNN's medical analyst Jonathan Reiner on Trump's health, saying he "was one of many to voice alarm about the president's 'manic' address."
