DNC Changes Debate Requirements, Frustrating Some 2020 Democrats

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The Democratic National Committee is revising the criteria that 2020 candidates must meet to qualify for upcoming primary debates, including one that it will sponsor in Nevada on February 19. In an announcement on Friday, the organization said it would double the polling threshold and eliminate donor requirements, a move that could pave the way for outlier candidates like former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg -- who has been functionally barred from previous debates because he has refused to take donations from other individuals -- to make it on to the stage. Coverage of the news has focused largely on the details of the policy change as well as the ensuing responses from primary candidates, many of whom have criticized the organization for altering the rules so late into the process.

Current and former candidates for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination lashed out at the Democratic National Committee for changing debate qualification rules that would give Michael Bloomberg an opening to make the stage.

"The DNC didn’t change the rules to ensure good, diverse candidates could remain on the debate stage. They shouldn’t change the rules to let a billionaire on. Billionaires shouldn't be allowed to play by different rules — on the debate stage, in our democracy, or in our government," Massachuetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren said in a tweet on...
