White House Looks Into Recent Deaths and Disappearances of Scientists
Summary from the AllSides News Team
Mysterious deaths and disappearances of experts tied to advanced research and technology are fueling claims of possible connections, catching the attention of social media and now the White House.
White House: After being asked by Fox News Correspondent Peter Doocy, President Donald Trump said he just had a meeting about the subject, saying "I hope it's random," adding that "we're going to know in the next week and a half."
Missing Or Dead: Since 2023, at least 8 people mostly involved with space research and nuclear science have either died or gone missing, some under suspicious circumstances. Some are also claimed to have connections to Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) research.
Nuno Loureiro: The MIT professor was shot to death at his home in February. He was a nuclear science and engineering professor, and had recently been tapped to lead MIT's Plasma Science and Fusion Center. Police said Claudio Neves Valente, a former classmate of Loureiro, killed him. Valente had also killed two students at Brown University and wounded nine others two days before, and then killed Loureiro before killing himself, according to police.
Michael David Hicks: A scientist working at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and a part of the space program's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), Hicks passed away on July 30, 2023, at the age of 59. The cause of death was never made public and there is no record of an autopsy being performed.
Frank Maiwald: Also working at JPL, Maiwald was involved with a project called Surface Biology and Geology, where he reportedly designed a critical instrument for mapping the "living color" of the earth in more detail than the human eye can perceive. Just more than a year prior to his death, he was working towards helping astronauts detect signs of life on other planets. Maiwald passed on July 4, 2024, also without a public cause of death or autopsy records.
Monica Reza: Aerospace engineer for JPL, Reza oversaw the Materials Processing Group, and went missing June 22, 2025, while hiking in the Angeles National Forest in California.
Melissa Casias: Casias disappeared after dropping off lunch for her daughter. She was an administrative assistant at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in New Mexico.
Anthony Chavez: Last seen leaving his house on foot May 8, 2025, Chavez, also an employee at LANL, left his car locked in the driveway and left without his phone, wallet, or keys.
Steven Garcia: Employee of Kansas City National Security Campus, an organization developing nonnuclear components of nuclear weapons, went missing August 28, 2025. Garcia reportedly left his home on foot carrying only a handgun.
Carl Grillmair: Astrophysicist at Caltech's Infrared Processing and Analysis Center, a partner with JPL, was shot and killed outside his home February 16, 2026. A 29-year-old man was charged with the killing.
William Neil McCasland: Former commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory, and connected to LANL, Retired Air Force Major General McCasland went missing February 27, 2026, after leaving his New Mexico home with only a pair of boots and a handgun. He reportedly possessed top secret information on UAPs, however, his wife said his involvement with UAPs was minimal at best.
How The Media Covered It: Mediaite (Lean Left) highlighted that "Trump vowed to get answers" for the "mysterious trend." The New York Post (Lean Right) highlighted Trump being asked whether a foreign adversary could be responsible, with his response being "Well, Biden had open borders; it wasn't very hard to get here." Newsweek (Center) also highlighted the White House involvement and provided a list of the names of those missing or dead.
