Pentagon Directs States to Train 500 National Guard Units for Rapid Deployment
Summary from the AllSides News Team
The Pentagon has directed National Guard units nationwide to form a 23,500-member quick reaction force (QRF) capable of rapidly responding to domestic unrest, according to an internal memo.
The Details: According to The Hill (Center bias), the memo was signed on Oct. 8 by the National Guard Bureau Director of Operations, and requires nearly every US state, along with Puerto Rico and Guam, to train 500 Guard members in de-escalation, radio communication, nonlethal tactics, and the use of equipment such as body shields, batons, tasers, and pepper spray. Less-populated states like Delaware and Alaska will have 250 and 350 Guard members, while Guam will have 100. Each state will also receive specialized gear and full-time personnel to oversee readiness. The QRF is set to be fully operational by April 1, with a smaller 200-member federal team expected to be deployable by early January.
For Context: The directive follows President Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to cities in response to crime and unrest. Earlier this week, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth extended National Guard deployment in Washington, DC, from Nov. 2025 to Feb. 2026. The Guard has also been deployed in Los Angeles, and Memphis, though courts have blocked similar deployments to Chicago and Portland.
How the Media Covered It: Just the News (Lean Right) highlighted the training includes civil disturbance, crowd control, and public safety operations. TownHall (Right) said the Left will have a “meltdown” as local law enforcement will now have backup if “left-wing shenanigans get out of hand again.” The Hill wrote the Trump administration has “increasingly moved to use the US military to push his political agenda” in Democrat-led cities. It highlighted previous National Guard deployments, including to Los Angeles to quell “largely peaceful protests.” Washington Post (Lean Left) said the directive is the “latest indication of longer-term Trump administration plans to more readily dispatch soldiers to US streets.” It highlighted troops would get a “specialized course that includes the proper use of batons, body shields, stun guns and pepper spray,” but didn’t mention de-escalation initiatives.

Cue the meltdown. Local law enforcement is going to have back-up should left-wing shenanigans get out of hand again. The Trump administration is making it clear that urban unrest and mayhem by these lefty clowns will not be tolerated—it’s not the summer of 2020. The Wall Street Journal reported that the Pentagon might be creating new rapid response units within the National Guard to assist.
