Donald Trump told the judge who oversaw his Manhattan criminal trial that his conviction should be tossed out due to the Supreme Court’s recent decision on presidential immunity, saying the prosecution was an effort “to front-run the Supreme Court on a federal constitutional issue with grave implications.”

In a 55-page court filing, Trump’s lawyers argued that evidence used during the trial improperly included “official acts” that he undertook as president. In a July 1 decision arising from one of Trump’s other criminal cases, the Supreme Court said former presidents are immune from prosecution over many of their official acts.
