Nyah Mway was a 13-year-old boy whose family escaped persecution as refugees nine years prior and on Friday night while walking home from a graduation party, he was stopped by police and ultimately shot and killed.
And members of the community are demanding justice and making their presence known.
At a special meeting of the Utica Common Council on Monday, members of the community carried signs and stared icily at representatives.
The meeting only lasted about five minutes and included three items on the agenda and when it became apparent to those in attendance that the Common Council wouldn’t address them, they began chanting Nyah Mway’s name. After carrying this chant for a time, they took their protest outside city hall.
