Postmaster General Confirms USPS Will Not Send Mail Ballots To States Not in Compliance

Postmaster General David Steiner said the US Postal Service (USPS) will not deliver mail-in ballots in states that refuse to provide voter data to the federal government while testifying before the Senate Homeland Security Committee on Wednesday.

A New Twist: Steve Benen (Left bias), writing opinion for MS Now (Left) highlighted the Trump administration's "highly aggressive efforts to obtain state voter rolls," saying that so far, these efforts have "failed spectacularly." Benen called Steiner's policy plans with the USPS system "a new twist on the broader gambit." Benen explained that "As bizarre as this might sound, states apparently would compile lists of mail voters under the plan, with the expectation that USPS employees would use the lists to screen ballots for eligibility," adding that "Voters in the states that failed to meet the White House's demands would be out of luck."

Expressed Alarm: A Daily Beast (Left) article headline said, "Trumpy USPS Boss Admits He Plans to Cause Election Chaos." According to the article, "The move comes as White House insiders have expressed alarm about Republicans' chances in the November midterm elections in the face of Trump's record-low approval ratings and widespread voter dissatisfaction with the war in Iran and the cost-of-living crisis."  

Abide and Comply: Outlets on the right, like Just The News (Lean Right) and Newsmax (Right) tended to highlight Steiner saying "I would think that states would want the information to ensure that the ballots that they think they're sending out are the ballots that are actually getting sent out." Newsmax also mentioned that the White House said "the order is designed to strengthen election integrity by improving voter eligibility verification through existing federal resources, including Social Security records and the Department of Homeland Security's SAVE database." Newsmax also said that Steiner is abiding with the Trump administration while Just The News said he is complying.
