The Republican convention makes a play for the black vote. Will it work?

The Republican National Convention’s third night was largely geared toward one group: black voters.

The GOP featured several black speakers who could speak to the hardship and bigotry that many black people in the United States faced (and still do face) unjustly. Former NFL player Burgess Owens (whose great-great-grandfather was brought to the U.S. as a slave) spoke about growing up in the Jim Crow era, when segregation threatened to cripple his opportunity and take away his freedoms. And then, there was Clarence Henderson, who was arrested during a sit-in during the civil rights movement.
