Unauthorized Immigrant Charged With Murdering Virginia Woman at Bus Stop

Summary from the AllSides News Team

An unauthorized immigrant with over 30 prior arrests has been charged with murdering a 41-year old woman at a bus stop in Virginia.

The Details: Stephanie Minter was allegedly stabbed multiple times by Abdul Jalloh at a bus stop in Hybla Valley on Feb. 23. Jalloh, who is being charged with second-degree murder, entered the US illegally in 2012 from Sierra Leone, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The DHS said Jalloh has been arrested over 30 times for assault, rape, drug possession and firing a weapon. In an X post, the DHS asked Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger to commit to not releasing Jalloh from jail without notifying ICE, saying he is "a perfect example of why we need cooperation from sanctuary jurisdictions" and third-country removals.Β

Spanberger Responds: Gov. Spanberger's office sent a statement to 7News (Not Rated) telling DHS it would like to see Jalloh deported, but that DHS should "request a signed judicial warrant to ensure [Jalloh] is deported." An opinion for Townhall (Right bias) said Spanberger was "protecting" Jalloh and argued that in Spanberger's two months as governor, she has made the state a "haven for violent criminals."

For Context: In Feb., Spanberger signed an executive directive that ended existing agreements between Virginia's state law enforcement and ICE. DHS said it previously lodged an immigration detainer for Jalloh in 2020, and that he was given a final order of removal. National Review (Lean Right) and New York Post (Lean Right) reported that several of Jalloh's previous charges were dropped because most of his victims were homeless and refused to testify against him, according to the Fairfax County Commonwealth's Attorney's office.

How the Media Covered It: The story was covered primarily by outlets on the right. AllSides did not find coverage from the left. Newsweek (Center) was the only Center outlet AllSides found coverage from. Outlets on the right emphasized the role of failed immigration enforcement and Minter's role as a mother. Outlets varied in their count of Jalloh's previous arrests, with some reporting "over 30" and others reporting "over 40". An opinion in Newsmax (Right) criticized what it called Democrats' protection of "predators like Jalloh", which it said makes murders like Minter's "harder to prevent." It also said "no one will take to the streets over Stephanie's slaying."
