ICE Agent Fatally Shoots Woman in Minneapolis

Summary from the AllSides News Team

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot a 37-year-old protester inside her vehicle during an altercation in Minneapolis on Wednesday, sparking a vast split in media coverage.

The Details: Video footage shows ICE officials ordering the woman to exit her vehicle that was blocking the road. Officials approached the vehicle and attempted to open the driver's side door as she reversed. She then accelerated forward, and an agent opened fire and fatally shot her. The woman, a US citizen, was not a prior target of ICE, according to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey condemned the official for "recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying" and told ICE to "Get the f*** out of Minneapolis." Department of Homeland Security (DHS) assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the official acted in self-defense, "sav[ing] his own life and that of his fellow officers." Minnesota's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the FBI launched a joint investigation.

For Context: The Trump administration deployed 2,000 ICE agents to Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Tuesday in what the agency's acting Director Todd Lyons called the "largest immigration operation ever." The deployment followed widespread reports of fraud in the state linked to Somali immigrants.

From The Left: Media on the left often framed the shooting as an abuse of power. Axios (Lean Left bias) said the woman "was in a vehicle that drove close to federal agents." The outlet highlighted that federal agents responded to protests after the shooting by "releasing chemical irritants as a plume rose and bystanders were seen trying to clear their eyes with milk and water." It did, however, give voice to both Democrats and Republicans who commented on the issue.

From The Right: Some media on the right framed the official's action as an act of self-defense. New York Post (Lean Right) said the woman "attempted to barrel her SUV into the officer's path." The outlet noted that a different angle of footage "appears to show the SUV run into the officer who fired the deadly shots as he leaps out of the path." However, it also highlighted that the shooting occurred "less than a mile from where George Floyd died under the knee of former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin in 2020," and, like Axios, it gave voice to both Democrats and Republicans.
