Summary from the AllSides News Team
Recent investigations found that roughly $1 billion in public funds were stolen from Minnesota's safety net programs over the past five years. The findings resulted in dozens of arrests, mostly of Somali immigrants. Media on the right prominently featured the story, ahead of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz's (D) anticipated reelection campaign. Media on the left focused on President Donald Trump's criticisms and planned deportations of Somali natives.
"The Lethal Power Of The Racism Grift": "When officials raised concerns about one of the Somali scams, the scammers threatened to publicly brand them as 'racist,'" wrote an opinion writer for New York Post (Right bias). "And here's the thing: it worked." The writer argued the fraud "speaks to the lethal power of the racism grift" in the West, and "state officials are so scared of being called racist that they'll even turn a blind eye to criminal behavior." He asserted, "The Somali scammers knew how to silence their doubters β just cry 'racism.'" The opinion piece β one of many on the political right β claimed that some of the money was sent to the Al-Shabaab terror group in Somalia.
"Political Mudslinging Between Boomers": The Washington Post Editorial Board (Lean Left) claimed there is no evidence of the charged Somalis' intentions when they came to Minnesota. "The hard truth is that making more money available for the poor also makes programs more prone to abuse." The writers reasoned, "Walz correctly called it lazy 'to demonize an entire community on the actions of a few.' Threatening the status of law-abiding refugees is morally bankrupt. But it is also lazy to sing the praises of Minnesota's famously generous welfare state when its merits, and its resources, are evaporating." They spoke negatively of Walz by stating, "The governor is not helping himself by refusing to take responsibility for the welfare fraud that happened in plain sight during the pandemic⦠The numbers alone made clear what was happening." But the board also denounced Trump's recent criticisms of Walz that "have already pivoted the story away from mass-welfare fraud to political mudslinging between boomers."

Everything about the Minnesota fraud scandal is horrifying.
It is shocking that armies of scammers β almost all Somali immigrants β were able to pilfer so much money from the American taxpayer.
These con artists created sham nonprofits and billed the state for services they never actually provided.
One of them, Feeding Our Future, promised to put food into the bellies of hungry kids.
In reality it just put money β the American people's money β into the bulging bank accounts of Somali swindlers...
Is Minnesota too well-governed? That was Gov. Tim Walz's explanation for how his state allowed more than $1 billion worth of public funds to be stolen on his watch. The Democrat explained Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" that Minnesota is a generous, prosperous and well-run state. "We're triple-A bond-rated," he said. "But that attracts criminals."
Does it? There is no evidence the 86 people charged so far for allegedly lining their pockets with taxpayer money flocked to the Land of 10,000 Lakes for low-yield bonds. Their sights were set...
