Charlie Kirk Shooting: Details Emerge About Suspect Tyler Robinson’s Background
Summary from the AllSides News Team
Updated 9/15/25 at 4:37pm ET: The FBI reportedly linked Robinson to the shooting via DNA evidence on Monday.
Tyler Robinson, the suspected gunman in the fatal shooting of conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, is now in custody after federal authorities released images of a person of interest. As the investigation continues, details about the 22-year-old Utah man’s background are emerging, along with questions about his alleged motive.
Robinson’s Background: Robinson briefly attended Utah State University as a pre-engineering major but left after one semester, university officials told Fox News. At the time of his arrest, he was enrolled in an electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said Friday that a family member of Robinson told investigators the suspected shooter “had become more political in recent years” and had lashed out about Kirk during a recent family dinner.
Classmate and Colleague Speak Out: Media outlets have interviewed individuals connected to Robinson, some of whom requested anonymity. A former classmate told CNN that Robinson and his family were conservative and supported President Donald Trump ahead of the 2020 election. An electrician who worked with Robinson described him as shy and said he “wasn’t talkative unless he was spoken to.” The coworker added that Robinson “didn’t really talk political … unless someone brought it up,” and noted that “he wasn’t too fond of Trump or Charlie (Kirk)”.
For Context: Kirk died after being shot in the neck on Wednesday while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University. Trump said Friday on Fox and Friends that the suspect was in custody. Robinson’s father allegedly assisted in the capture of his son. The assassination of Kirk has sparked widespread media coverage and criticism from conservatives, some of whom have accused individuals—particularly on the political left—of celebrating his death online.
How the Media Covered It: CNN (Lean Left bias) framed the shooting as rooted in Robinson’s personal decline and online culture, highlighting his upbringing and engraved bullet casings that suggested a possible political motive. Fox News (Right) focused on law enforcement details, the investigation timeline, and the role of Robinson’s family in turning him in. Newsweek (Center) covered a story that focused on Robinson’s father, spotlighting his role in securing the arrest while also noting political reactions from Trump and other leaders.
