Brown University Shooting Suspect Found Dead

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The suspect in last week's mass shooting at Brown University and the separate killing of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor two days later was found dead on Thursday.

The Details: Following a six-day manhunt, police identified the suspect as Claudio Neves Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national who studied Physics at Brown University 25 years ago. The suspect was also tied to the killing of MIT professor Nuno Loureiro at the professor's home near Boston, utilizing CCTV footage and a witness to link the two separate cases together. 47-year-old Loureiro was also from Portugal, and according to police both the professor and the suspect studied at the same university in Portugal in the late 1990's. President Donald Trump following the developments late Thursday ordered the immediate suspension of the Diversity Immigrant (DV1) Visa program, which is what the suspect utilized in 2017 to enter the US, obtaining his green card months later.

For Context: The suspect was found dead, reportedly of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a storage facility in Salem, New Hampshire with a satchel and two firearms. There was also evidence tying the suspect to the Brown University shooting found in a car nearby. There has been no motive suggested for either attack and FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Ted Docks said "Even though the suspect was found dead tonight our work is not done. There are many questions that need to be answered."

How The Media Covered It: Outlets on the right, like The National Desk (Right bias) and the New York Post (Lean Right) tended to highlight Trump's suspension of the DV1 program and the fact that the suspect utilized this program to enter the US. These outlets also highlighted statements from Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem saying  "This heinous individual should never have been allowed in our country." Outlets on the left like ABC News (Lean Left) and The Guardian (Left), conversely, gravitated towards the timeline of the incidents and evidence found, rather than mentioning Trump's decision to end the DV1 program or the suspects utilization of the visa program. Outlets in the center like BBC News (Center) did mention the visa program and Trump's decision to suspend it following the shooting, although unlike outlets on the right did not lead with this information.
