Trump Promotes Crime Reform in First DC Speech Since Leaving White House

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday gave his first speech in Washington, D.C. since President Joe Biden was sworn into office.

In a speech delivered at the America First Policy Institute’s two-day summit, Trump primarily focused on public safety issues and crime reform. He advocated for the death penalty as punishment for convicted drug dealers, claiming that "you’ll save 500 lives" by executing a drug dealer. Trump suggested police squad cars should be parked on "every corner" of American streets that "are riddled with needles and soaked with the blood of innocent victims."

Other ideas that the former president promoted included moving homeless people out of cities, reinstating stop-and-frisk policies and terminating policies that promote the "sexualization of minor children." Trump also claimed that he "ran a second time" and "did much better," labeling the 2020 election a "catastrophe" and "disgrace to our country." He continued to tease his 2024 presidential run and told the crowd that "we may just have to do it again."

Left-rated coverage focused more on how Trump repeated his "false election claims" that led up to the "Jan. 6 insurrection" and "praised" the policies of Chinese President Xi Jinping. Right-rated outlets were more likely to label Trump's appearance as a "homecoming of sorts" and accentuated that the Biden administration's "lax criminal-justice policies" has led to "surging violent crime rates in nearly every major American city."

Former President Trump, giving his first speech in Washington since leaving office, attacked soft-on-crime policies on Tuesday for leading to a national wave of violence in many U.S. cities, and said police must be allowed to do their jobs.

“Under the Democrat rule, in Democrat-run cities, Democrat-run states and a Democrat-run federal government, the criminals have been given free rein more than ever before. There’s never been a time like this,” Mr. Trump told the America First Policy Institute summit at a Washington hotel.

He said American streets “are riddled...

Former President Trump on Tuesday voiced support for imposing the death penalty as punishment for convicted drug dealers as part of a speech in which he laid out a series of drastic measures to curb crime.

“The penalties should be very, very severe. If you look at countries throughout the world, the ones that don’t have a drug problem are ones that institute a very quick trial death penalty sentence for drug dealers,” Trump said at the America First Policy Institute.

“It sounds horrible, doesn’t it? But you know what? That’s the...

In dueling speeches not far from the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, former President Donald Trump repeated the false election claims that sparked the Jan. 6 insurrection while his former vice president, Mike Pence, implored the Republican Party to stop looking backward.

Potential foes for the 2024 GOP nomination, neither man was ready to announce a campaign, but their speeches underscored divisions in the party between Trump loyalists and Republicans who may still like Trump’s ideas but are more than ready to move on.

The former president was clearly not ready...
