Elon Musk Launches Grokipedia as Alternative to Wikipedia

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Elon Musk launched Grokipedia on Monday as an AI-powered alternative to Wikipedia. The new platform, created by Musk’s company xAI, debuted with 885,279 AI-generated and AI-fact-checked articles. Musk described it as a step toward “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”

The Details: In a post on X, Musk announced Grokipedia as “version 0.1,” claiming “Version 1.0 will be 10X better, but even at 0.1 it’s better than Wikipedia.” Unlike Wikipedia, Grokipedia does not allow users to make direct edits. Instead, users can request changes through Grok, which either executes or declines the modification. Several entries reportedly draw from Wikipedia framework, and Forbes (Center bias) noted that many pages include the disclaimer: “The content is adapted from Wikipedia.”

For Context: Musk has long accused Wikipedia of harboring left-wing bias. NewsNation (Center) and The Hill (Center) reported the platform reflects conservative complaints that Wikipedia is “woke” and excludes conservative sources. They noted Musk’s personal feud with Wikipedia was sparked after it documented a controversial gesture he made at a 2025 event, which he has denied was Nazi-like. The Wikipedia Foundation released a statement saying, “Wikipedia’s knowledge is – and always will be – human…This human-created knowledge is what AI companies rely on to generate content; even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist.”

From the Right: Fox Business (Lean Right) reported Grokipedia launched in the afternoon but crashed within hours, before returning online later that evening. The New York Post (Lean Right) highlighted the platform's potential to challenge Wikipedia and highlighted user praise for the new site. Political commentator Mario Nawfal (Lean Right) had a running X thread comparing Wikipedia and Grokipedia’s coverage of topics like climate change, the Jan 6 Capitol Riots and the use of ivermectin during the COVID-19 pandemic. He wrote, “One site writes like reputation management for Big Pharma. The other writes like an encyclopedia should. Wikipedia turned from crowd-sourced knowledge into crowd-sourced propaganda. The difference shows why alternative platforms are winning.”

From the Left: Several outlets on the left, including Wired (Left) and The Verge (Lean Left)criticized Grokipedia for promoting what they called far-right talking points and misinformation. The Verge cited examples where Grokipedia reportedly lent credence to vaccine skepticism, downplayed the scientific consensus on climate change, and used language viewed as transphobic and racist–including “deadnaming” Chelsea Manning and describing George Floyd primarily by his criminal record. They also pointed out differences between Wikipedia and Grokipedia's coverage of Musk and his businesses, which are reportedly framed more positively on Grokipedia.

The tech titan has railed against Wikipedia — which is reportedly cited in 70% of AI query results and is the top result for most Google searches about people or things — for frequently citing news outlets like the New York Times and NPR while leaving conservative outlets off its approved list of sources.
