MLB Players Issued Warning Over Handwritten Bible Verses on Pride Night Caps
Summary from the AllSides News Team
Major League Baseball (MLB) issued a warning on Monday toward three players who wrote Bible verses on their Pride Night hats, saying it was prohibited under uniform regulations. Outlets on the right generally highlighted criticism from Christians toward the MLB over freedom of expression, while outlets on the left and in the center emphasized backlash toward the players that the actions undermined LGBTQ individuals.
The Details: San Francisco Giants players, Landen Roupp, JT Brubaker and Ryan Walker, wore Pride Night hats with handwritten Bible verses on them during their game against the Chicago Cubs on Friday. MLB's chief communications officer said the writing on the cap "violates our rules" and that the MLB has warned the players of future violations. The MLB told New York Times (Lean Left bias) that the warning "is not disciplinary" and had "nothing to do with the content of the message" as the league "respect[s] players' right to free expression."
From the Right: Fox News (Right) described the Bible verses as an act of defiance "to the LGBTQ agenda during Pride Nights." The outlet wrote, "Naturally, that public expression of Christian faith did not go over well with left-wing sportswriters" who "will be overjoyed to hear that [MLB] has now officially stepped in." Fox also noted that it was "interesting" the MLB issued the warning as "writing on caps has long been a part of the sport," and it gave examples from the 2025 World Series and after Charlie Kirk's assassination. New York Post (Right) emphasized criticism from actor Rob Schneider who called the league "anti-Christian" and said he would "pay the fines for any MLB Christian player who wears a Bible verse on their uniform." The Post also quoted one of the players saying his choice to wear a Bible verse "was not motivated by hostility toward LGBTQ people," but a response to being "forced" to support Pride when he doesn't morally support it. In an X post, Vice President JD Vance wrote, "Trump won we don't have to do this anymore."
From the Left and Center: Associated Press (Lean Left) and NBC News (Lean Left) both grounded their coverage in the 5-1 loss by the Giants to the Cubs that night. NBC News described the verses as "a silent Pride Night protest" and the writing as "defac[ing]" the uniforms. Associated Press wrote that the MLB is "a leader among the four major U.S. pro sports" that "sometimes hosts Pride Nights…to support their LGBTQ+ fans" and because its season overlaps with Pride Month. Associated Press and PinkNews (Left) both noted that one of the verses, Gen 9:12-16, was about God's covenant with all living creatures, which was represented by a rainbow. NBC wrote that the Bible verse "has become a favorite citation for opponents of gay rights" and quoted a Giants broadcaster who "urged the players to understand how their actions could offend the San Francisco community." PinkNews cited online criticism, including from one person telling the players to be more "tolerant Christian[s]" and another who said the players were "desperate for attention." ABC7 (Center) primarily highlighted criticism from LGBTQ advocates who described the display as "disgraceful" and saying it could impact fan support.
