Vice President Vance Family Expecting Fourth Child

Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha, announced on Tuesday they are expecting their fourth child. It's the first time since 1870 when a sitting Second Lady has been pregnant.

The Details: The couple made the announcement on social media, saying they're welcoming a baby boy in July. They also expressed gratitude to the military doctors who "take excellent care of our family" and the staff members who "ensure that we can serve the country." JD Vance, 41, and Usha, 40, have three other children: Ewan, 8, Vivek, 5 and Mirabel, 3.

For Context: Usha is the first Second Lady in modern history to be pregnant while her husband's in office. The last was President Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President Schuyler Colfax's wife, Ellen, who had a son in 1870. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy lost a son shortly after a premature birth while Kennedy was in office.

"Pronatalist": Several Left-rated outlets contextualized the announcement within Vance's "pro-family" views, with Time (Lean Left bias) and Vanity Fair (Lean Left) calling him "pronatalist." Time said Vance has previously "sounded the alarm" on declining birthrates, branded Democrats as "childless cat ladies" and called on Americans to have more children. Vanity Fair wrote Vance's "signature issue" in 2024 was "how to juice America's birth rate with pronatalist policies" and noted they announced the pregnancy on X, which it said was owned by "fertility-crazed Elon Musk." It also described how Usha's life has changed as Second Lady, including "[leaving] her job", and noted public speculation over their marriage and Vance's comments that he wished Usha would convert to Christianity.

"Pro-Family": Outlets on the Right generally highlighted congratulations to the couple or framed the pregnancy within a "pro-family" narrative. New York Post (Lean Right) highlighted moments when the other Vance children drew public attention. It also noted "gossip" over the state of their marriage after photos showed Vance and Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk's widow, hugging in October. Daily Wire (Right) quoted the White House celebrating "The most pro-family administration in history!"

Older Motherhood: Newsweek (Center) framed the announcement within a broader, growing trend of aging mothers. It said Usha was "now part of the fastest-growing group of mothers in the US" and that "for the first time in modern US history, women over 40 are now giving birth at higher rates than teenage girls." It also quoted an OBGYN who highlighted benefits of later-life pregnancies and their "potential link to longevity," including that it was a sign that a woman would "more likely live to 100." 

Divorce Rumors: Several outlets on the Left and Right noted previous controversy surrounding their marriage. USA Today (Lean Left) emphasized rumors of divorce, saying Usha hadn't been seen in public in months and hadn't been wearing her wedding ring. The Washington Times (Lean Right) quoted Vance saying he and Usha "get a kick out of" the speculation and writing Vance has been a "fierce defender of their relationship."
