Summary from the AllSides News Team
Elon Musk drew mixed reactions after he officially announced the formation of the “America Party” on Saturday.
The Details: After polling users, Musk stated on X, “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.” Opinion writers across the political spectrum commended the idea of a third party, but many were pessimistic about the true “America Party” outlook and agenda. Criticisms were not fully bipartisan, but they did cross quintessential political borderlines.
Not What People Want: Jim Geraghty (Lean Right bias) for Washington Post (Lean Left) implied that Americans don’t really have a strong desire to break free from the two-party system. Geraghty wrote, “Americans say they want options beyond Democrat or Republican, but when presented with those options in the form of, say, the Green Party or the Libertarian Party, they shrug and pick either the Democrat or the Republican.” He noted the past failures of third-party campaigns; however, in labeling Musk as “fiscally conservative” and “socially liberal,” Geraghty expressed an opportunity for Musk to sway both major political affiliations.
“Dead on Arrival:” Similar sentiments were shared by an opinion writer for Newsweek (Center), who argued that Musk’s campaign is largely unrealistic: “While Musk's frustration with Republican fiscal hypocrisy is entirely justified…his proposed solution ignores both the structural realities governing our electoral system and the unprecedented opportunity currently before him.” The writer did not suggest Musk’s success will be impossible but rather that he would have to exhibit extremely strategic prowess to overcome the existing system.
Ample Alternatives: Kristin Hansen (Lean Left), Co-founder of AllSides Mismatch, addressed a letter to Musk in which she pointed to correcting political hyperpartisanism as far more imperative than starting a third party amidst an already flawed system. She wrote, “Elon…please consider using your massive media platform and your considerable financial resources to support America’s cross-partisan democracy-strengthening movement.”

Billionaire Elon Musk's announcement of the America Party following his split with President Donald Trump over the fiscally ruinous One Big Beautiful Bill reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of American political mechanics. While Musk's frustration with Republican fiscal hypocrisy is entirely justified—the legislation adds over $3 trillion to the national debt while gutting programs working families depend on—his proposed solution ignores both the structural realities governing our electoral system and the unprecedented opportunity currently before him.
The problem with Musk's third-party approach lies in what political scientist call Duverger's Law...

The news cycle moves so quickly, it’s hard to believe that just a month ago, Elon Musk was brawling online with President Donald Trump over the catastrophic spending levels of the One Big Beautiful Bill, and now, not only has the bill been signed into law, but Musk has announced the formation of the rather generically named “America Party.” (Not the X Party?)
Musk is obviously bent on revenge against Trump and the GOP for ignoring his warnings about runaway spending, but he says he envisions the America Party as...
Hi Elon, so I see you’re launching a new political party. Totally understand the impulse, and I guess if anyone can pull off the impossible, it’s you. I say this after watching the Falcon Heavy’s two booster rockets stick perfect landings back on Cape Canaveral last summer. I mean, just f-ing incredible!
You’re frustrated, I get it. Runaway national debt. Reduced incentives for renewable energy. Lower federal spending on space exploration. Failure to invest in long-term American competitiveness. I’m frustrated about these things, too!
Which is why I’m asking you...
