DOGE Reportedly Disbanded, White House Officials Dispute Claims

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has reportedly been disbanded eight months before its contract is scheduled to end, according to Reuters (Center bias). The White House has denied these claims.

The Details: Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor reportedly told Reuters DOGE "doesn't exist" and is no longer a "centralized entity." According to the outlet, DOGE's operations have been taken over by other entities, including the Office of Personnel Management. Two prominent DOGE employees have also reportedly been moved to the National Design Studio–a new body created by President Trump. DOGE called Reuters' claims "fake news" in an X post and Kuper responded that his words were taken out of context and the "principles of DOGE remain alive and well."

For Context: DOGE was created in January 2025 to streamline federal operations, reduce government spending and improve interagency coordination. The agency was led by Tesla CEO Elon Musk before his 130-day contract expired and a public dispute with Trump in June. The DOGE website claims the agency saved an estimated $214 billion–$1,239 per taxpayer–through canceled contracts and federal layoffs, however some analysts say these numbers are inflated. DOGE was set to complete its work by July 2026.

How the Media Covered It: Outlets on the left framed the report within a broader narrative of chaos, dysfunction and uncertainty over DOGE's claimed success. The Guardian (Left) emphasized DOGE's aggressive agency "invasions," mass firings and lack of transparency. The Daily Beast (Left) highlighted Trump and Musk's fight, and characterized DOGE's disbandment as a predictable collapse of a chaotic, costly experiment with what it saw as minimal accomplishments. Outlets on the right covered the Trump administration's denial of the claims. Epoch Times (Lean Right) highlighted Kupor saying his remarks were misrepresented, and underscored ongoing efforts to reduce "fraud, waste, and abuse." Zero Hedge (Lean Right) framed the report as evidence of deliberate misinformation by Reuters, which it positioned as a foreign actor inserting propaganda. It characterized the outlet as "fake news," "globalist," and politically motivated.
