Summary from the AllSides News Team

Caitlyn Jenner—the longtime Republican, transgender activist, former reality TV star and Olympic gold medalist—officially announced her campaign for governor of California on Friday. Jenner, 71, joins a growing field of Republicans seeking to oust Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom, who will likely face a recall election once California’s legislature verifies the roughly 2.1 million signatures gathered by recall supporters. In a statement, Jenner said that California had been diminished by “one-party rule that places politics over progress and special interests over people.” Jenner also criticized Newsom’s record on the COVID-19 pandemic, including “over-restrictive” lockdowns and school closures. Coverage varied widely across the spectrum in its descriptions of Jenner’s background. Some right-rated outlets, like Fox News, posted several articles about various aspects of Jenner’s campaign announcement.
