Some Outlets Recant Reporting on Gaza Shootings, Others Double Down

Summary from the AllSides News Team

On Tuesday, several news outlets reported that Israeli soldiers killed Palestinians at an aid site in Gaza. Israel has pushed back against that claim, and some outlets gave Israel's claims weight, while others have doubled down.

The Details: An Israeli spokesperson said, “This week, it was claimed that the IDF fired on civilians at the aid distribution site. This is a totally false report, it echoes Hamas propaganda,” though he did say IDF soldiers fired warning shots about a kilometer from the aid site. According to Straight Arrow News (Center bias) Washington Post (Lean Left) originally reported, “Israeli troops kill over 30 near U.S. aid site in Gaza, health officials say.” It changed the headline after Israel denied involvement, adding, “The early versions fell short of Post standards of fairness and should not have been published in that form.” Meanwhile, the BBC (Center) and Associated Press (Left) stood by their original reports.

From the Right: The Free Press (Lean Right) noted that reports from the Washington Post and New York Times (Lean Left) relied on witnesses that were “local health officials” likely affiliated with the “Hamas-controlled Gaza Ministry of Health.” “Hamas wants to sabotage Israel’s plans to cut out the terrorist group from one of its remaining sources of control and leverage in Gaza: distribution of food and aid... This, however, does not eliminate the possibility that Israeli soldiers have in some cases fired in the direction of Palestinians awaiting aid. Israel is attempting to deliver food in the middle of a war zone. Even the most professional armies make mistakes,” it added.

From the Left: CNN (Lean Left) released an investigation on Thursday saying that more than a dozen witnesses saw Israeli soldiers fire, and video analysts point to Israel. “None of the videos definitively show who fired,” but “weapons experts said the rate of gunfire heard in the footage, as well as images of bullets retrieved from victims, were consistent with machine guns used by the Israeli military that can be mounted on tanks. Multiple eyewitnesses said that they saw gunfire emanating from Israeli tanks nearby,” it said.

Widely circulated reports on Tuesday, June 3, from several news outlets claimed that Israeli forces killed dozens of Palestinians near an aid distribution site in Gaza. Together, those reports generated international concern and calls from the United Nations to launch a formal investigation.

Now, The Washington Post is issuing corrections after omitting Israel’s initial denial of some of those incidents. Israel now says that it fired upon individuals who it believed were approaching an...
