Is the NOAA Ready for Hurricane Season?
Summary from the AllSides News Team
As hurricane season approaches, left and right media have split on how prepared the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is to respond.
From The Left: Vox (Left bias) published an analysis that said this season is “shaping up to be a doozy” and highlighted cuts made by the Trump administration to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the NOAA. Vox quoted a former director of the National Weather Service, who said, “Our worst nightmare is that weather forecast offices will be so understaffed that there will be needless loss of life.” Associated Press (Left) authored a similar article, arguing the “massive cuts to the federal system” are “potentially as chaotic as the swirling winds.”
From The Right: National Review (Lean Right) wrote that the “head count at the [NOAA] has been reduced significantly… prompting media criticism and scaremongering” but that the agency’s Laura Grimm, NOAA’s chief of staff and acting administrator, is confident that the reorganization left the agency in a better position to accomplish its mission. The New York Post (Lean Right) highlighted that an NOAA spokesperson blamed media outlets for “criticizing” scientists.

Forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predict “above-average” activity this season, with six to 10 hurricanes. The season runs from June 1 to November 30.
