Biden's Reversal of Mask Mandate Plan Draws Skewed Coverage

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Joe Biden said in an interview Sunday that he would not issue a nationwide protective mask mandate if elected president, questioning such a move's constitutionality. Biden had previously said he would "immediately" issue a mask mandate if elected amid the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. The news only drew coverage from right- and center-rated sources as of Tuesday night. Business Insider was the only center-rated outlet to cover the news, and did so differently than right-rated sources, framing the development as Biden's running mate Sen. Kamala Harris (Calif.) "walking back" the plan. Many right-rated reports painted the reversal as an objectionable "flip-flop", and as being indicative of Biden's purported ignorance of constitutional law and incompetence as a candidate. Left-rated Vox published an article in August exploring the legality and likelihood of a mask mandate after Biden promoted the idea at the Democratic National Convention.

The estimates by the experts are that it will save over 40,000 lives in the next three months. Forty thousand lives, if people act responsibly,” Biden said last month. “Let’s institute a mask mandate nationwide starting immediately,...

Kamala Harris, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, walked back Joe Biden's promise for a nationwide mandate to wear a mask, saying the Biden administration will instead enforce a standard of mask-wearing.

Last month, Biden vowed that, if elected, his administration would institute and push for a mask mandate.

"We'll have a national mandate to wear a mask — not as a burden, but to protect each other," Biden said during the final night of the Democratic National Convention. "It's a patriotic duty."

Joe Biden finally finds copy of Constitution on mask mandates
Opinion

Add this to the list of Reasons Not To Vote For Joe Biden: He no longer thinks a national mask mandate would be a good idea. It’s not that he thinks national mask mandates are wrong. It’s that he ever thought national mask mandates could ever fly in the first place.

It’s that it took him oh-so-long to see the light on this — on what should actually be a Constitution No-Duh.

Why’d it take the former vice president so long to reach this (obvious) conclusion?

When Biden said in...
