Shouting Matches Ensue in AG Bondi's Epstein Files Hearing

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Attorney General (AG) Pam Bondi faced questions from Democrats and Republicans about the Department of Justice's (DOJ) investigation into the Jeffrey Epstein case at her hearing before the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.

Dems Demand Apologies to Epstein Victims: Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) asked if Bondi would "apologize for what your Department of Justice has put them through—with the absolutely unacceptable release of the Epstein files and their information?" Jayapal was referring to the DOJ's failure to redact some victims' names and likenesses from the released files. Bondi responded, "I won't get into the gutter for her theatrics."

Questions from Republicans: On the topic of the unredacted victims' names, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) said to Bondi, "Literally the worst thing you could do to the survivors, you did." He also asked questions about three documents from the files that he described as "emblematic of the massive failure of the DOJ to comply with the Epstein Files Transparency Act." Bondi accused Massie of having "Trump Derangement Syndrome" and called him a "failed politician."

Accusations of Filibuster: After a back-and-forth between Bondi and Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Rep. Jamie Raskin asked for Nadler to receive 45 additional seconds as he argued that Bondi was trying to "filibuster" through the hearing. Bondi said that Raskin was a "washed-up loser lawyer." Bondi said of the Democrats questioning her, "None of them asked Merrick Garland, over the last four years, one word about Jeffrey Epstein. How ironic is that? You know why? Because Donald Trump."

How the Media Covered It: Outlets across the political spectrum noted the tense and chaotic nature of the hearing. New York Post (Lean Right bias) published a headline saying that Bondi "explodes" at Raskin and called their conversation a "fiery clash." Fox News (Right) said the hearing "devolved into a chaos of shouts and interruptions." Politico (Lean Left) wrote that "Democrats think Bondi's hostile performance throughout the hearing will help their cause in the midterms as they make a case for a return to normalcy." Reuters (Center) noted that the DOJ's "tradition of independence" has "eroded" as it has aligned with President Donald Trump's grievances since the start of his second term.

"Attorney General Bondi, you apologized to the survivors in your opening statement for what they went through at...

Democrats walked into the House Judiciary Committee hearing with Attorney General Pam Bondi Wednesday expecting her to be nonresponsive and combative. They walked out with what they believe to be a more compelling argument for winning back the majority.

For four hours, the nation's top law enforcement officer largely refused to answer questions from Democrats about the Justice Department's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files.

In some moments, Bondi deflected queries by asking members if they cared about crimes or violence in their districts, flipping through a massive binder of...
