Iran Abandons Nuclear Deal After Soleimani Killing

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Iran will no longer honor its commitment to limit uranium enrichment as part of a 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, the country's leaders announced Sunday. In a state TV broadcast, officials said the country would "continue its nuclear enrichment with no limitations and based on its technical needs," though they added it would also continue to co-operate with the UN's nuclear watchdog, the IAEA. Both left and right-leaning outlets cast the announcement as part of ongoing fallout following the killing of Qasem Soleimani, Iran's top commander, by the U.S. military on Friday. It also comes less than a year after President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew the U.S. from the nuclear deal, negotiated by the Obama administration in 2015.
