FEMA Staffers Send Congress Letter About Leadership Concerns, Agency Places Several on Leave

The Trump administration placed “more than a dozen” Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) workers on leave Tuesday, just a day after they signed a letter sent to members of Congress protesting the direction of the agency.

The Details: The news was first reported by The Washington Post (Lean Left bias), which cited “people familiar with the situation and documents reviewed.” On Monday, “about 180” current and former FEMA employees sent the letter, arguing FEMA leaders’ inexperience could leave the agency ill-prepared for future disasters. On Tuesday, several of those who signed the letter received notices that they were put on administrative leave, effective immediately. The staffers are currently “in a non-duty status while continuing to receive pay and benefits.” According to The Associated Press (Left), the notice workers received said the decision was “not a disciplinary action and is not intended to be punitive.”

For Context: FEMA has been at the center of political criticisms for decades. Hurricane Katrina, the costliest storm in US history, hit the southern US 20 years ago this week, and FEMA under the Republican George W. Bush administration was criticized by many for its response. In October 2024, the organization was criticized by conservatives for its response to Hurricane Helene. Shortly after the 2024 election, FEMA was at the center of a scandal where one of its officials told disaster relief workers to avoid homes with signs supporting President Trump.
