Trump Threatens Added Tariffs For Canadian Wildfire Smoke
Summary from the AllSides News Team
President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to implement more tariffs on Canada over smoke from several large wildfires drifting into the US.
Trump's Statement: Trump on Truth Social said "We are holding Canada responsible for the fact that they are not properly maintaining their Forests, and Brush therein, and the United States is being unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air, the quality of which is dangerous, and totally unacceptable!" Trump added that it is a result of "Willful Negligence, and becoming a yearly occurrence, costing the United States Billions of Dollars, which cost of this pollution must of necessity be added to TARIFFS Canada is currently paying."
Backtracking On Climate Change: Outlets on the left, like The New York Times (Lean Left bias) tended to focus more on the response from Prime Minister Mark Carney who said "The fight against climate change is the responsibility of all countries, including the United States." The New York Times article highlighted this, saying that when Carney was asked about the complaints from the US, he "pointed to the United States' backtracking on climate change measures, including a shift away from renewable energy."
Far-Left Liberal Party: Outlets on the right like Breitbart (Right), conversely, tended to frame the issue around the Canadian government "largely abandon[ing] forest management as a national policy," adding that as a result "these fires have grown larger, more dangerous, and more polluting." According to Breitbart, "the far-left Liberal Party has repeatedly responded to demands to proactively manage its forests and aid both indigenous communities and provincial governments by blaming the fires on 'climate change' and rejecting claims that it could be doing more."
