Celebrities Face Criticism for Climate Abuses

Recently, data on private jet flights has been cited to frame some high-profile individuals as climate hypocrites. Calling out celebrities for environmental damage has become a popular trend on social media websites such as Twitter. University of Central Florida student and data programmer Jack Sweeney has grown a large following with his automated accounts that post flight information and the climate impact data of notable figures such as Elon Musk, Drake, Blake Sheldon, Kylie Jenner, among others.
Media outlets across the spectrum jumped on the topic when Yard Digital, a UK-based marketing firm, published a list of celebrities with the highest CO2 emissions from private jet use. Singer Taylor Swift tops the list with rougly 8.3 tons of emissions so far in 2022. According to The Nature Conservancy, the average U.S. citizen emits 16 tons annually.
Left-rated outlets have heavily criticized the actions of the celebrities listed, with one Washington Post writer calling private jet use “excessive” and “a climate nightmare.” Right-rated outlets have more often drawn connections to celebrities' affiliations with liberal causes, with a Fox News writer publishing a list of climate “hypocrites.” Conversely, one Axios writer downplayed celebrities’ impact on the environment, stating that individual actions, positive or negative, were not significant enough to affect the climate.

Popular celebrities are no strangers to being at the top of rankings. But several big names recently found themselves featured on a new list: “Celebs with the Worst Private Jet Co2 Emissions.”
The analysis of flight data, which was published online Friday by a U.K.-based sustainability marketing agency Yard, came on the heels of other celebrities such as Kylie Jenner and Drake weathering intense public criticism after it was revealed that their emissions-spewing private jets logged trips as short as 17 minutes and 14 minutes, respectively.
