Will Trump's Defamation Lawsuit Against CNN Succeed?

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Former President Donald Trump’s legal team filed a lawsuit on Monday in a Florida court against CNN (Lean Left Bias). The lawsuit is seeking $475 million in punitive damages from the cable network over alleged defamation. The 29-page lawsuit accuses CNN of scheming to destroy his political career with slanderous statements and comparisons to Adolf Hitler.

This is the latest in a series of Trump lawsuits against outlets and opponents, with similar results expected. A judge threw out a lawsuit Trump filed against Hillary Clinton in September, stating that the court filing read like a “political manifesto.” Last year, Trump filed a suit against the New York Times (Lean Left Bias) for a story about the former President’s finances.

As for the CNN suit, perspectives from both sides of the spectrum have concluded the claim from the Trump team has no legal standing and is more preformative than anything. One writer for MSNBC (Left Bias) mused a potential backfiring of the case on the Trump team, stating that “in asking the court to say definitively that it is unfair to compare Trump to Hitler, he has opened the door for the courts to reach the opposite conclusion.” A writer for the Washington Examiner (Lean Right Bias) cited a contradiction at the heart of the suit, stating that “the former president has spent years lambasting CNN as an outlet that deprioritized reporting in favor of commentary. Does he now contend its arguments are to be taken as statements of fact?”

Trump wants CNN punished for comparing him to Hitler. Good luck with that.
Opinion

Former President Donald Trump is not a Nazi. He is not, nor has it been reported that he has ever been, a member of the National Socialist Party. He also is not, in fact, some sort of genetic copy of Adolf Hitler. To misappropriate Dickens: "This must be distinctly understood, or nothing wonderful can come of the story I am going to relate."

Analysis

Former President Donald Trump sued CNN (Left bias) for defamation on Monday, seeking at least $475 million in damages.

Trump’s lawsuit alleges that CNN used “false, defamatory, and inflammatory mischaracterizations” to interfere with Trump’s political career. It argues that the phrase “the Big Lie,” in reference to Trump’s unfounded claims of widespread voter fraud, is an attempt to connect Trump to Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf.” “Beyond simply highlighting any negative information about the plaintiff and ignoring all positive information about him, CNN has sought to use its massive influence — purportedly...

Opinion

Former President Donald Trump is suing CNN for defamation and demanding $475 million in damages. His lawsuit has nothing to do with the law. Instead, it helps Trump mobilize his supporters as he looks toward a 2024 presidential run. For a few million dollars in legal fees, Trump has gained media attention while bolstering his political narrative of fighting media bias and elites.

Again, however, this lawsuit isn't about remedy under the law.

Trump's lawsuit takes particular issue with numerous CNN personalities who have compared him to Adolf Hitler. The...
