Summary from the AllSides News Team
President Trump was rushed out of the ballroom at the Washington DC Hilton Saturday night as a heavily armed gunman interrupted the White House Correspondents' Dinner with gunfire.
The Details: The gunman, apprehended and reportedly identified as Cole Allen, exchanged fire with law enforcement officials. Trump Cabinet members were also rushed from the scene, and attendees took cover under tables. Allen was reportedly armed with a shotgun, handgun, and knives. Video showed he entered the room by sprinting past security and through a checkpoint. One Secret Service officer in a bulletproof vest was shot but was swiftly released from the hospital. Trump said the officer is in "very high spirits." Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche said the motive was not immediately clear but that "preliminary" findings suggest he was targeting administration officials and "likely" Trump himself.
The Suspect: Allen was identified in media reports early on Sunday. He reportedly earned a mechanical engineering bachelor's degree in 2017 from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Allen's purported LinkedIn says he has worked for six years as an educator at a private tutoring and college admissions company. Allen was reportedly a supporter of Kamala Harris – Federal Elections Commission filings from October 2024 showed he donated $25 to her campaign via ActBlue. He is expected in court on Monday and will face firearm and assault charges, including a count of assaulting an officer with a deadly weapon.
How The Media Covered It: Outlets framed the incident itself slightly differently in their initial reports or article openings. Due to the breaking nature of the story, several reports changed over time as new information emerged. Many outlets authored several pieces of coverage. Some outlets from the left, like The Washington Post (Lean Left bias) and CNN (Lean Left), initially described the gunshots as "loud" noises.
