Summary from the AllSides News Team
Former Presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton demonstrated messages of hope and unity ahead of America's 250th anniversary.
The Details: Each of the leaders sat with NBC Today Show's (Lean Left bias) Jenna Bush Hager for exclusive interviews that aired on Tuesday. Hager, Bush's daughter, inquired about the country's political landscape, culture, and narratives leading up to the semiquincentennial on July 4, 2026. President Donald Trump, though a former president as well, was not part of the "History Talks" event; however, he and the History Channel are expected to announce a separate anniversary project sometime in the spring.
Unity in Democracy: Each former president spoke optimistically about harnessing unity in the democratic process.
- Clinton: "The country will survive as much by the process, by the freedom to speak, the freedom to vote, the freedom to be active in politics as by any particular issue. And because it's like it is, compromise is essential."
- Bush: "The beauty about democracy is that it's self-correcting. And one of the key things I want to try to do during the 250th is encourage citizens to participate in the process, and if you don't like what's going on, vote, and that's how America heals itself." He encouraged Americans, "Study our history so you have a better sense for what the future will be like. And be a citizen, not a spectator. And by that, I mean participate in the process but also love a neighbor like you'd like to be loved yourself."
- Obama: "If we extend respect and thoughtfulness to our fellow citizens – even if we disagree with them – if we understand that part of this democratic project is to sort through our differences in peaceful, legal ways, then I'm confident that we're going to have another 250-year run that's going to be just as good." He said of his presidency, "Getting that broad overview of who we are as Americans, it made me much less cynical. It makes me less prone to think there's an 'us' and a 'they.'"
- Biden: "We're the most unique country in the world… in the sense that we really do think democracy is dictated by the rule of the Constitution. And we do believe and we act… that all men are created equal." He also said, "I'm not sure we're as divided as we portray."
How The Media Covered It: Media across the political spectrum outlined a strong narrative of hope amid polarizing times. Though coverage was sparse on the right, Washington Examiner (Lean Right) joined fellow outlets in highlighting the presidents' optimism for the US.
